Abstract
Cephalexin, a new oral cephalosporin antibiotic which is well absorbed from gastrointestinal tract, was evaluated in the treatment of 31 patients with various infections using daily dose of 1 to 4 grams.
In 24 patients, cephalexin was the only antibiotic used and in 7 it was used after failure of treatment with other antibiotics. The effect was good in 27 cases, fair in 1 case and no response was noted in 3 cases. 26 cases with good response were composed of 7 cases of typhoid fever, 3 cases of shigellosis, 5 cases of acute urinary tract infection, 6 cases of pneumonia and 4 cases of acute bronchitis. The effect was also favorable in the treatment of septicemia due to antibiotic resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Herellea vaginicola. However cephalexin was ineffective in the treatment of pseudomonas pneumonia, paratyphoid fever and urinary tract infection due to E. coli in male.
Sensitivity of the bacteria isolated from clinical specimens of patients during the time of treatment to disc containing cephalexin 30 ?g was generally good in Gram-positive bacteria as well as in some Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli, salmonella, shigella) but the response was not so favorable to pseudomonas, klebsiella, serratia and alcaligenes species.
